Poem: Flight

Excerpt from Four: “Dear Dad”

I clutched the canvas

Laced tightly around the wheel,

Which was almost too wide

For the span of my chubby little arms.

Toes curled, clutching the deck

I peered out over the waves

Eyes just barely able

To gaze beyond the bow.

I couldn’t even see the land

The ocean spread for miles all around

I closed my eyes and I could still

See it, smell it, taste it

When I opened them again

I couldn’t believe that I

Was steering, I

Was moving this whole boat, I

Had never felt closer

To flight.
